Dramatic pictures of homes underwater, streets flooding, mudslides, and “catastrophic” flooding in the wake of Hurricane Fiona, which hit the Dominican Republic on Monday and is still wreaking havoc in Puerto Rico, reveal the “life-threatening” conditions on the island still scarred by Hurricane Maria’s effects from five years ago.

In the 3.2 million-person U.S. territory, more than 1,000 water rescues have been done, and more are ongoing, according to governor Pedro Pierluisi. By late Monday, up to 30 inches of rain were expected to fall in the area, according to AccuWeather.

It can take several days to restore electricity once a disruption entirely affects the island. In addition, nearly 800,000 consumers were without access to drinking water as of Monday.

As of Monday, the authorities had recorded two fatalities in Puerto Rico and one in the Dominican Republic.
