Florida pastor and son arrested in alleged $8m Covid relief fraud scheme

On Wednesday, Evan and Joshua Edwards belonging to Orlando were arrested on suspicion of using the money for opulent purchases, including a multimillion-dollar home close to Walt Disney World.

“I’m glad they got arrested,” a neighbor informed NBC News, speaking on condition of anonymity. “It’s a long time coming.”

As per the Daytona Beach News-Journal report, the father and son duo from Canada are charged with conspiring to conduct bank fraud.

Spreading the “Christian love in theology and service to the destitute,” the Edwards, Christian missionaries, established the faith-based Aslan International Ministry.

They did missionary work in Turkey, and later on, the family moved to Florida, settling about an hour’s drive outside Orlando in 2019.

Federal prosecutors now claim that starting in April 2020, the Edwards family engaged in fraud by falsely reporting to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that the family ministry had 486 employees and a $2.7 million salary per month.

According to the Department of Justice report, the family used the embezzled funds to buy a home in Golden Oak, a Four Seasons Private Residence.

As per the complaint, the funds were diverted into the family bank accounts “in an attempt to hide and conceal their whereabouts.”

In September 2020, federal investigators tried to examine the house in Golden Oak but discovered it was unoccupied. According to NBC, the family was subsequently stopped in their Mercedes SUV. The bags were labeled “Faraday bags” to block radio frequencies and avoid tracking, and the police discovered them to be filled with shreds of paper, bank information, and electrical equipment.

The family was arrested on an immigration-related offense but was later released after the case was dropped. However, a judge ruled that the $8.4 million the family wrongfully acquired must be forfeited in April 2021. Family members did not object to the seizure.

Within five months of publishing the details of the scam and its alleged cover-up, Evan and Joshua were apprehended.
